How does bail work?

While sometimes confusing and complicated, the bail process is rather straight forward. In San Diego county, which the bail bond market mostly consists of but is not limited to San Diego Central Jail, Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility, and the Vista Detention Facility, there is a very straightforward process which all inmates undergo. When an individual is accused of a crime and arrested they become a defendant. The defendant is assigned a bail amount based on the crime they were accused of committing and the bail scale in San Diego County. Every crime has a corresponding bail amount. For example, if you were suspected and arrested of driving while under the influence, you would be assigned a bail of $2,500. At this point, you can either take $2,500 in cash directly to the jail and deposit the sum of money. This money will be returned to the depositor in it’s entirety once the defendant has completed their responsibility with the court. However, if the defendant does not want to deposit the full amount, then they may utilize the services of a Bail Bond company. In this scenario, the defendant or someone in their support system would make a non-refundable payment of 10% of the bond, in this case $250, unto the Bail Bond company. At this juncture, the Bail Bond company is solely responsible for the defendant to show up in court and complete the entire court process up until the bond is exonerated. This proves to be the route most families opt for as it is cheaper in the short run, and sometimes as assigned bond amounts become loftier, sometimes it is too much of a financial burden to come up with the entire amount.
